Why Counselling Could be Your Next Step
Most people often associate counselling with the therapy sessions in films where you lie on a sofa bed and cry out your emotions. However, this is not really the case. In this blog post I will give you my own insight into how counselling helped me and whether it could be your next step. I will list some ways you can get counselling at the end of this piece.
Talking Goes a long way...
It took me five years to seek counselling. This was because I thought that I did not need it or that other people's problems were bigger than my own. I thought that speaking to my friends and family that are not professionally trained in giving advice was good enough. However, once I took the plunge to talk to someone trained in dealing with problems like mine, my mental wellbeing got so much better. Counselling is not just talking about your feelings and then leaving. It is discussing your emotions and coming up with new techniques and solutions in order to combat the voices in your head.
Stranger Danger?
A counsellor is professionally trained to deal with your problems so there is no danger in talking to them. The first time I went into the counselling room it felt like a safe haven. It was as if whatever problem I had had been left at the door. By me being able to tell a counsellor everything that was going on in my head, it made me able to put it all out on the table. Together, we both put all the pieces in an order that made sense so then I had an idea of why I was feeling the way I was. By her being a professional it legitimised how I feel because she was taking everything I said seriously. Additionally, she had no clue who I was or who I was talking about so I felt no judgement.
Only Depressed People Go to Therapy...
Okay so this is definitely not the case! You can go to therapy if you have any sort of mental health problem, even if it is not diagnosed. This could even be for a one off session. Do not be put off by going to therapy because you think that only people who are really ill need it. Counselling is there to make you make sense of things and to enable you to gain techniques into how to look after you wellbeing. It never hurts to talk to someone about how you are feeling.
The Weight Lifted
The walk from your session is utter bliss. Whenever I came out from talking about my feelings for an hour, I could not wait for the walk. For me it was a half an hour walk where I would just be with my thoughts. They were for once not negative as it felt as if a weight had been lifted from my shoulders. At the end of each session I felt as if all of a sudden everything made sense and I was not being over dramatic about my emotions.
