Signs Someone is Suffering with Depression

Do you think a family member or friend could be struggling with depression? If so, this blog post will be your guide to tell if their mental health is deteriorating. As always, I will include some links at the end of the post if you or someone you know needs help.

Appetite and Weight Changes

When someone is depressed, their weight and appetite can fluctuate. Some peoples' might increase, whereas for others it might decrease. This is because when a person feels low, they might turn to food for comfort or they may not have any interest in food at all. This could just be a one off if someone is feeling low but if it persists, you may want to think about reaching out to them.

An Increase of Irritation and Anger

Someone who is suffering with depression will be more irritable. This is because they are constantly at conflict with their negative emotions so when a minor inconvenience or frustration happens, they may get unnecessarily angry. My tip on how to deal with this is to not react to it or provoke them. When they are calmer, have a word with them and see if they are okay.

Negative Outlooks

When someone has depression, they are constantly battling negativity in their head. This could then lead to them seeming more pessimistic than usual. This is normally because they think they are worthless and, therefore, life is worthless. Remind them this is not the case and give them something positive to think about. Although, it will not help if you condemn them for being negative.

Not being able to Focus

As I've previously mentioned, someone with depression will be focused on their overwhelming negative thoughts. This means the person may be more indecisive or forgetful because they are unable to concentrate on what is going on around them. Don't push them to make a decision or make a big deal about them being forgetful. Always remember they are at constant battle with their own thoughts.
